Giocoppo takes Scody Cup
Anthony Giacoppo has won the Scody Cup following on from teammates Steele Von Hoff (2011) and Pat Shaw (2010).
The Scody Cup comprises all the races run by John Craven’s Caribou Publications and include the Tour of Gippsland, Tour of the Great South Coast, Tour of Murray River and the Tour of Tasmania. Riders receive points based on both individual stages and overall classification rewarding both consistency and victories at the same time. Previous winners include Johnathon Cantwell, Bernard Sulzberger, Leigh Howard, Wes Sulzberger and teammates Pat Shaw and Steele Von Hoff. With the exception of Pat who obviously captains the team and Bernard who rode in the UK for Raleigh all the other winners ride in the World Tour, so it’s a fair indication of a riders potential.
Steele’s win was the result of an incredible tally of 18 stage wins across all the events which put him head and shoulders above every other Australian sprinter. Anthony’s win too was the result of a bag of stage wins but was bolstered by the overall win at the Great South Coast which netted him a valuable 30 point bonus. In all AJ scored points in every Scody Cup event and managed to triumph despite a fierce on road rivalry up and coming sprint star Luke Davidson.
The Scody Cup is just another accolade in a growing list for the laid back West Australian who’s step up to the Pro ranks seems like just a matter of time.
